Student Workshop with Sheyne Tuffery

On June the 26th Viard Bishop College, of Porirua, had a three hour workshop with renouned artist and educator, Sheyne Tuffery.

Sheyne showed the students some wonderful examples of his own work and took them through a mosaic woodblock tutorial, from carving to printing.

The students produced some bold, exciting prints and some even got on to their second and third blocks.  Great work guys!!!

A big thanks to Sheyne, Lisa Jagusch (Viard art teacher) and to Margaret and Keri (the Pataka education team) for helping to create such a wonderful atmosphere.

Basia takes amazing workshop for Mana colleges talented students

Basia Smolnicki was fantastic to watch, as she guided the students through their first experience of printmaking.  The all produced a number of dry point prints and there talented inventiveness was so much fun to watch. As a group they were a pleasure to accommodate, a credit to their school and their art teachers.  They had great drawing skills and were really focused. Pataka education (Margaret and Keri) were fantastic as always in creating a warm atmosphere, thank you so much to them.   But most of all, thanks for the students who made the workshop such a success.

Pataka concert: Dazz Jacko

Dazz Jacko performed an acoustic set in the Spine at Pataka on Sunday, 6th of May.

The performance was warm with beautiful harmonies between the two musicians.  These guys are wonderfully talented – if you get the chance to see them, we highly recommend it!

Children’s workshop Pataka

On Sunday the 6th of May, we held a children’s workshop in the Spine at Pataka.  The focus was on making musical instruments.

Thank you to the kids who created amazing colourful musical instruments as part of the work show. It was lovely to see where their imaginations took them. See below for some of the fabulous creations!

Pataka concert – Ten Eleven

‘Ten Eleven’ performed at Pataka today, two moving performers, a bustle of people moved about the busy galleries, and yet the power of their performance created its own space. Their own composition New season was really powerful and their version of ‘Some one that i used to know’ brought people out from the surrounding rooms to watch.

A duo of Whitireia Applied Arts degree graduates Dylan Frater and Shan Jordan, 10 11’s beautiful original songs combine piano, guitar and vocal duet, evoking comparison with The Swell Season (featured in the UK cult movie Once), along with that hard-to-define New Zealand musical twist.

They have a great Wellington sound, in the tradition of ‘Fly my Pretties’  and ‘Phoenix Foundation’.  With their well crafted lyrics,  strong melodies and engaging performance, I’m really looking forward to the next time I see them perform and can’t wait to buy my copy of New Season.(Can be brought at http://teneleven.bandcamp.com/ )

Dazz Jacko Performing this Sunday 1pm at Pataka.

Dazz Jacko – an acoustic guitar and vocal duo of Whitireia musical alumni featuring highly skillful singer-songwriter Darrell Vickers and gifted guitarist Jackson Kyle. Their work is reminiscent of The Finn Brothers in its classic New Zealand sounding songwriting, with Kyle adding his unique jazz and fusion inspired instrumental fireworks.

Darrell and Jackson from Stretch to mold will be performing an acoustic set on the 6th of May (Sunday), at Pataka in Porirua.  The set starts at 1pm and finishes at 2pm, so come along and cheek out some Stretch to Mould acoustic originals.

Nestor Opetaia: Lazyboy Ordeals and UFOs

Nestor has composed an amazing piece of music to sit along side his painting.  Nestor has an incredible sensitivity to colour, his large painting is testament to his ability to create space and rhythm.

“Lazyboy Ordeals and UFOs” is a mishmash of ideas,concepts,notions,feelings ,music all conjured up in one.

Inspired by the ordeals of being badly ill, and the restless nights of agony that over time slowly turned into a soothing and uplifting recovery.
This experience happened in March along with other intriguing events including some weird sightings in the sky.” Nestor

Rachael Gannaway: Original composition by Ben Fulton

 

Ben and I approached this project with an idea to create respective pieces that respond to a favourite quote of his by Carl Jung – “There is no coming to consciousness without pain.”

I used the quote quite literally – contacting Deaf artist, Ryan Cassidy, who helped me with a NZ Sign Language translation.  Thanks Ryan and nzsl.vuw.ac.nz!

Also taking cues from the multi-layered nature of the piece of music and from the metaphoric lyrical content, I have been working with fabric and screenprint.
